Belize Barrier Reef

At 185 miles in length, dotted with around 200 cayes, the Belize Barrier Reef is the second largest in the world after Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, while the variety of reef types and marine life within its borders is unequaled in the northern hemisphere.

Imagine floating along an underwater mountain ridge. To the east stretches an abyss of nothing but deep blue. Below lies an 80-degree slope, covered by a quilt of magnificently-colored coral plates and swaying fronds.

Diving on the reef is not one continuous wall of coral, but is splintered into segments separated by relatively deep channels. The oxygen and plankton (Free floating microscopic plants and animals) carried by the Caribbean Sea flush through these channels, attracting over 460 species of fish, that a snorkeled or diver is likely to see while swimming over coral reefs. The coral reefs, it has been said, are visual poems, filling patterns. If so, Belize is a master poet, and the Belize Barrier Reef is as epic of colossal proportions.

FISHING

Guided half/full day trips to flats, reef and deep-sea fishing. Tackle supplied. Practice catch-and-release fishing.

For decades, Anglers have been coming to Belize seeking the excitement of jumping a tarpon or stalking the elusive permit, choosing their locale from the country’s mud flats, the rivers, or the deeper water near the reef.

There are at least eight fishing resorts located on the cayes, rivers, and coral atolls; giving Belize a exotic surroundings and several of the most sought-after-salt-water game fish, the most popular of which is undoubtedly the tarpon, snook, and bonefish.

Known for its spectacular jumps, tarpon in Belize range in size from 5 to 150 lbs.

Out on the reef, barracuda, snapper, and jacks are also plentiful off the Belizean coast, and many tourist charter individual boats for fishing reservations.

The recommended way to fish in Belize is through an established lodge or fishing resort, which uses qualified guides, rather than simple chartering a boat. Nevertheless, individual guides are also available at Bare Foot Caribe Resort; with many years of experience under their belts, Bare Foot Caribe Resort guides are good at what they do. Not only do they know the waters and where the fish are most likely to be, but some also have great stories about past experience.

SNORKELING

More than 20 snorkeling sites at the barrier reef. Day trips to Lighthouse Reef, the Blue Hole, Goff's Caye, Sergeants Caye, Hol Chan Marine.
